What is a food forest? According to Permaculture Apprentice, "a food forest is a type of garden where you grow many different fruits, nuts, herbs, and even vegetables. It is designed to mimic a natural forest and has many different layers, from trees to shrubs, ground cover plants, vines, and more. These plants all work together, help each other grow, and create a balanced ecosystem that provides an abundance of food and resources and an ideal habitat for wildlife helpers."
My journey into the "food forest" began on a mission trip in 2013, when I was assigned to an urban farm project. That experience really changed the way I thought about food production and food systems, in general. I returned passionate about community gardens, urban farms and sustainable food systems. I started a small garden project in a nearby community. From there, through education and experience, I've come to understand that there is a better way and that enthusiasm isn't always enough. I also discovered that small changes do make a difference and that however steep the road is with challenges, there are many opportunities for success. Shared here are some brief explanatory and inspirational videos as well as a a link to The Biggest Little Farm, a documentary film that that follows the regeneration of a California farm. There is so much to discover and to do. :)
